Chapter 4
“What are you thinking about?” Mark asked, his blue eyes barely glimmers in the darkness. His soft hand pawed at her breast like a worry stone.
“What?” Natty asked, suddenly snapping out of her emotional haze.
“You seem distant.”
“What are you doing right now?” she asked. She turned to face him, her heart in her throat.
“I’m just asking you how you’re feeling. We’ve been hooking up for six months. I just figured—”
“You figured what?” Natty spoke the words slow and heavy, but Mark was oblivious to emotional tells.
“I don’t know, I figured we’re supposed to do more than just fuck.” He shrugged.
“What’s wrong with just fucking? We have a good thing going. Don’t ruin it by talking.” She was exasperated, or at least that’s how she wanted him to see her.
“You must think I’m really stupid, huh?” he stated.
A scowl formed on Natty’s lips. Where was this coming from? They had hooked up casually for six months, and now Mark seemed like he was trying to turn it into something more. Why now? What was he thinking?
“You’re not smart if that’s what you’re asking, but most people are pretty stupid in all fairness.”
Mark made a face in the darkness Natty couldn’t recognize. “I know this is just a casual thing or whatever, but maybe, I don’t know, it could be more than that.”
“No!” She snapped.
“I was thinking about what Maxine said—” he started.
“What did she say to you?” Natty asked.
“In the lodge, she called me your boyfriend. I know you don’t think of me that way, but it felt nice to be called that. You’re so sexy, Natty. You’re like the hottest girl I’ve ever hooked up with, and you’re smart, like really smart, smarter than most the girls I hooked up with. And you’re funny but in a mean way. I just thought, if you wanted to give it a try...” Mark looked away.
Natty groaned. “Don’t be stupid. What we have works. Why do you even want a relationship? You’ve been single your entire life. Aren’t you happy with that?”
“I mean, the sex is great but I was thinking about when I needed you to cover for me in the dining room. Or, when you got me a free drink from Maxine.” He shrugged again. “Maybe I need someone to look out for me. You’re really smart and probably know what’s best for me, more than I do.”
“I’m not trying to be your mom.” Natty glared at him.
“No, I’m just saying...I’m not good at this stuff. I don’t have a plan. My plan is to be a doorman until I keel over. Maybe, I don’t know, we can figure something out together. I want to support you, too, I just don’t know how. You’re so independent and stuff like you don’t need other people.”
“That’s right, and I don’t need to babysit a grown ass man.” She leaned up on her elbows to look at him.
“I’m not asking you to babysit me! I’m just, gah! Why is it so hard to talk to you?”
Natty heaved a sigh.
